Monument Shape & Finish
There are many monument shapes. Most common is a serpentine top with straight sides. The chart below shows a few of the most common shapes for both tops and sides.
A very common finish on the granite memorial is polished front and back with rock pitch on the top and sides. A polished surface is exactly how it sounds. The stone is polished to a smooth finish. Other finishes are shown below in the finish chart.
Some people walk through the cemetery looking at other memorials to see what they like.
There are four main types of monument finishes:
-
Polished - A smooth, glass-like finish that highlights the granite's color, depth, and crystal structure. Commonly used for the front and back of a memorial.
-
Honed - A smooth, non-reflective finish achieved by partially removing polish with dust. Creates a matte finish.
-
Steeled - A smooth, non-polished finish achieved by sandblasting with steel shot.
-
Frosted - A smooth, non-polished finish achieved by sandblasting with sand. Commonly used for panels behind names and dates on a memorial.
-
Rock Pitch - A rough, rustic finish that gives a timeless appeal and helps the monument blend in with its surroundings. Commonly used on the top and sides of a memorial.
